Episode #33: What Happens After Traveling with Nancy Vogel from Family On Bikes

On today’s episode, we’re speaking with Nancy Vogel from Family on Bikes. Nancy started traveling 30 years ago as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras. Since then, she has backpacked around South America, spent years teaching on the Navajo Nation, as well as several stints in Ethiopia, Taiwan and Malaysia. Nancy is best known for her 4 years of travel on bicycle with her husband and their twin sons, where they cycled as a family from Alaska to Argentina, pedaling over 27,000 miles. Today the Vogels are living in Idaho and their boys are getting ready to head off to college. Listen in to hear how Nancy reflect on their nomadic days and talks about what life is like after this kind of traveling winds down.

Tune in to this week’s episode to find out:

  • How Nancy and her husband’s initial decision to take a one year bike trip led to several years of nomadic living.
  • What methods the Vogels used to school their children during this four year period.
  • Which world record the Vogels broke on their journey.
  • What it was like for the kids to re-integrate into school after the trip was over.
  • How Nancy’s sons were able to get full-tuition scholarships to college without a traditional high school diploma.
